Building a liking for drama
June Tse / 2017-18 participant
This year is going to be a remarkable year for me - I enrolled a one-year part-time course about speech, drama and teaching skills hosted by HKTDA after reading a flyer about this course one day in the staff room at my serving school.
This is one of the quickest decision I have ever made in my life. I expect I have to do lots of talking and thinking instead of being bored in my seat, and the course does not upset me. I and other classmates, in which most of them are frontline teachers and some are teaching candidates, have lots of opportunities to experience how to act and deliver lines on a stage in a professional manner. Yet this course is more than assisting us to become actors or actresses. I and some of the classmates, have chances to design and implement a 30-min drama lesson in class. With critical and constructive feedback given by instructors after each teaching demonstration, I gain insights on conducting a drama lesson and using drama as a tool to teach in subjects like general studies/ liberal studies and General English.
Despite time constraint and tight teaching schedule, I attempt to deploy some drama conventions in classrooms, of which students can get involved in lessons in a positive way.
Times flies. Almost time for this course, I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards Miss Apple Wong, Mr Benedict Tsin and Miss Joyce Poon. Thanks for your teaching and constructive advice throughout the year. I am also very glad to have nice and experienced teachers to be my classmates. I hope building a liking for drama could be one of the reason to stay everybody connected after this course.
And most importantly, drama is fun!

About half a year ago, I had my first drama education lesson with the HKTDA. Out of my expectation, the instructor immediately filled me with awe by giving us a task — improvisation. The instructions were simple: get into groups, devise a short play, then act it out. We took the challenge and started our discussion spontaneously. Although most of us did not have much performing experience, we were all amazed by the creativity that everyone had shown when it's over. Since then I came to understand that drama is for everyone — whether we are young or old, new or experienced — it has the magical power that activates part of the most instinctive response of human.
Throughout the course of the programme, I was actively engaged in a range of activities such as doing improvisations, playing theatre games and participating in lesson demonstrations. Not only had I learnt about the theories and practice of teaching speech and drama, but by doing so I also realised the benefits of drama education on students’ whole-person development. Just to name a few: it can enhance language development and thinking skills, nurture confidence and creativity, broaden one’s mind and life experiences...And most importantly, drama is fun!
Coming to the end of the programme, I am truly grateful to Mr. Tsin, Miss Wong and Miss Poon, who devoted themselves to making it an enjoyable and eye-opening learning experience for all of us. As I am graduating to be an English teacher this year, I really look forward to incorporating drama conventions into my lessons. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you who aspired to become educators to embark on the journey of drama education and make use of this magical switch to unleash the potentials of our students!
